Use of Traditional Knowledge in Projects and I mplementation in the Athabasca Oil Sands Areas

To fulfil its mandate, CEMA must incorporate TEK into its decision making. Before CEMA can fulfil its responsibilities to include TEK, a level of understanding of TEK by CEMA members must first be achieved. A series of interviews with CEMA members, an Elders' Workshop, and a CEMA and Elders' Workshop were held to facilitate this learning process.

As a result of these three activities, not only was a greater level of understanding achieved, but also a strategy was defined, a series of steps necessary to include TEK were outlined, and a commitment was made to take at least the beginning action of setting up a Regional Elders' Council and forging communication links between the Elders' Council and CEMA.
